Way Signage Best Practices

Way Signage Best Practices

When planning and creating way signage for your space, there are some important factors to consider. These can affect how people navigate around the space, so following these way signage best practices will help to set them on the right path.

1. Simplicity

Overcomplicated or hard to read signage can make for a bad user experience. When designing your way signage, always create with the user in mind. What do they need to know and where could they possibly get lost or confused following your signage. Keeping these notes in mind can prevent any unnecessary confusion, which can reflect badly on your business.

2. Accessibility

Signage needs to be seen, this is obvious but not always achieved. Placing signage in an accessible space is extremely important, as this can affect the users onward journey or whether they even see it. Before installing the signage, mapping the layout can help to prevent any future mishaps. Other aspects such as colour and design style should also be considered (Text size, colours, overall sign size.)

3. Consistency

Knowing what to look for isn’t always obvious, especially if you are lost. Stick to the same or similar colour choices when creating your signage. As this creates a visually recognisable aspect for people to look for. This also helps to create a safe and calm journey for your user. As when they move through the building, the familiar branded signage becomes the beacon of light to follow.

4. Provide a pathway

When in a new space or building, it isn’t always obvious which way to go. Using arrows and signs for doors gives the user a starting point, helping them navigate their way. For example, giving the reception desk it’s own branded sign, then following along into arrows and door navigation with the same colours. Directory signage for larger buildings can also aid in this, sending the user down the correct path.
