Four Types of Wayfinding Signage

Four Types of Wayfinding Signage

There are four types of wayfinding signage that can be implemented throughout a building. Identification, Directional, Informational and Regulatory. All are essential in allowing your user to have a good experience within the space and find what they need. Planning and thoughtful consideration are very important, making sure the way signage in the building is suitable helps the users find their way.

Identification

Identify the room or space your user is about to enter.

Identification signage is important within a space, as a user may be trying to find a specific room in the building. Providing clear identification makes this journey easier, especially in busy spaces such as shared offices. For example, if the space has conference or meeting rooms. A vacancy slider sign is a simple identifier of whether the room is in use or not, preventing any disturbed meetings.

Examples – Door Signs and Department Signs

Directional

Provide direction to the user, help them to understand where they are or where they need to go.

Directional signage is important within a space, creating a pathway for users to find the area they need. Providing clear directions makes their journey much easier, especially in busy spaces. A clear directory or simple arrows reduces the chance of confusion for the user, guiding them on their way. Also, clear directional signage is useful for those who are partially sighted.

Examples – Arrows and Directory Signs

Informational

Show the user what and where facilities are within a space.

Informational signage is important within a space, showing users what facilities are available to them. Coupled with directional signage, informational signs take the user where they need to go easily. Create a pathway for the user that is simple to follow and shows them when they have arrived. Especially important for larger buildings and spaces, such as shared co-working areas and offices.

Examples – Amenity and Facility Signs

Regulatory

Key information about the space or room that the user must be aware of.

Regulatory signage is very important within a space. This not only shows a user what is prohibited within a space, but also what areas are for public use. Signs such as No Smoking or Private show the user what is required for the space they are in. Providing regulatory signage may also be required depending on the space or building, such as a factory, heath centre, care facility or work site.
